Jiangbin Zhang, President of Cambridge SPIE chapter, attended this year’s student chapter workshop in 2016 SPIE Optics + Photonics conference in San Diego, California. Cambridge Student Chapter has been active since the start of August and this is our first time attending SPIE student chapter activities. Over 150 student chapter members from over 100 countries, attended this year’s program, most of which were supported by the SPIE Student Chapter Officer Travel Grant.
Academic, social and networking activities were held during this one-day Leadership Workshop. Gauthier Louette, CEO of SPIE, firstly gave an introduction which outlined his exploration of the different life opportunities, from academia to industry. He proposed a diverse career prospect for the next-generation scientists, for example, to advance the knowledge of gene technology for cancer treatment, to tackle climate change, and for the sustainable development of human beings. Following this talk, Jean-luc Doumont, Principiae of the Workshop, hosted the discussion entitled “Being a leader”. The most exciting part was a role play designed to mimic tough situations while running Student Chapters or any other groups in that regard. The activities greatly enables the attendees to improve their skills to tackle these practical problems. In the following days, Jiangbin also attended ‘Lunch with expert’ where he had the chance to listen to the life story from Prof. Din Ping Tsai from National Taiwan University; in chapter outreach demonstration session, Jiangbin met the Student members from University of Southampton, watched various demonstration, and discussed experience of running student chapters.
